In an unprecedented move, Apple’s
CEO Tim Cook published a letter on the company’s website, admitting that
Apple’s new maps service is not up to par with the competition
In his letter, Tim Cook goes on
to say that the Apple Maps app has reached more than 100 million iOS 6 devices
and in just over a week accounted for nearly half billion searches. The latter is essential as
it helps Apple improve its service. He even agreed that the app is not upto the
mark and shockingly even suggested some ‘alternatives’.
In his letter, he suggested that
while Apple is trying to improve and remove glitches, users can try map apps of
Bing, MapQuest, or use Google or Nokia maps.
The company seems to be working
hard at revamping the app by removing bugs and problems from its map services,
but until then Apple users are free to go elsewhere and use other maps
services.
Why Apple introduced its own map services?
Apple decided that it no longer wanted to give Google all that valuable information about how iPhone customers were using Google Maps. Also they had an issue with Google’s voice guided navigation system. So it bought data for its mapping services from 24 suppliers, but they were unable to fix 1% data which was wrong and used it in their map app resulting into a blunder.
